What Is an Otolaryngologist?

Main | Wednesday, July 6th, 2011 | No Comments

An otolaryngologist (oh-toh-lah-ren-gah-luh-jist) is a doctor who specializes in diagnosing, treating, and managing diseases and disorders of the ear, nose, throat, head, and neck. They are often called ENT (ear, nose, and throat) doctors. There are a wide range of diseases and disorders that otolaryngologists treat. Some are treated medically and some are treated surgically. Diseases and disorders that fall under the specialty of otolaryngology include:

Ear

  • Hearing loss
  • Ear infections
  • Balance disorders
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
  • Certain cranial nerve disorders
  • Congenital ear disorders

Nose

  • Chronic sinusitis
  • Nasal allergies
  • Disorders of smell
  • Polyps
  • Nasal blockages

Throat

  • Diseases and disorders of the larynx and esophagus
  • Voice disorders
  • Swallowing disorders

Head and Neck

  • Infections
  • Tumors
  • Trauma to the face
  • Cosmetic and reconstructive surgery

Due to the wide-ranging diseases and disorders that are included in the specialty of otolaryngology, many otolaryngologists choose to subspecialize.

Otolaryngology subspecialties include:

  • Allergy
  • Pediatric otolaryngology
  • Plastic and reconstructive facial surgery
  • Surgery of the head and neck
  • Laryngology (disorders involving the voice and swallowing)
  • Otology (disorders of balance and hearing)
  • Audiology (hearing disorders)
  • Rhinology (nasal and sinus disorders)
  • Sleep disorders

Otolaryngologists are highly trained specialists whose total years of college, graduate, and postgraduate education can be as many as fifteen.  Additionally, otolaryngologists are required to pass the American Board of Otolaryngology examination before they can practice.
